Grass
Shack is an island apparel and
gifts boutique specializing in products from Fiji, and is
located in the middle of New Mexico in downtown Truth or
Consequences. The owner/proprietor, Akata is from the island of
Rotuma, a small Polynesian island in an isolated region of the
South Pacific, that is a territory of Fiji.
Come in and meet Akata. Ask her about her Polynesian
Dance lessons. She might even give you an on-the-spot
free lesson. Drop by the waterfall in front of the shop
and throw in some pennies, and now that you're lucky,
come inside and sample some 100% virgin coconut oil
lotions and soaps, beneath the roof of a thatched
hut with a spectacular view (wall sized mural) of
the Pacific Ocean through a grove of palm trees.
Akata's shop is truly an island experience in itself.
If a
personal visit is not possible in
the near future, well, take a trip without having to leave the
farm. Ideally, put on a Hawaiian shirt, or sarong and deck
yourself in shell jewelry, burn some incense in the living room,
decorate the place with some Fiji handicraft items and sit down listening to Hawaiian or Fijian music
